The cars were my first series. They began when I was returning from a car show. The idea intriqued me--I envisioned a colorful rendition; balancing artistic color, shape and contrast with a sculptural, fabricated, designed concept. A popular iconic image.

My series, "Flowers and Glass" contains many subjects.

Flowers, furniture, clouds and glass. Many of these allude to the Flemish painters of the 17th century. I divide the canvas into essentially squares and rectangles. The paintings that are more modern show glass in front of the flowers or photos of the flowers that show an abstracted image behind the glass and the natural image of the flowers as they are without glass. I use modern materials and techniques but carefully choose values and hues that consciously and /or subconsciously are recognized as Old World.

My interest lies in images that show an Old World reference using contemporary materials and techniques. I refer to cues that are conscious and/or subconscious and that are readily recognizable. I include valuable objects such as textiles, furniture and glass; and natural objects such as flowers, shells and insects.

Flemish artists recorded in their still life paintings more than just a pleasing arrangement of objects for viewing. These works combined the tradition of the spiritual use of plants and animals together with an interest in the science and the acquisition and display of rare and luxurious goods.
